The first department of commodity science (plant and animal pharmaceutical materials) was founded in 1549. At the University of Padua (Italy). In 1943 the course “Medical Merchandising” was created (1st Moscow Medical Institute I.M. Sechenov).

In 1985. In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Health of the USSR the course was supplemented by the study of pharmaceutical products with the name of the discipline “Medical and Pharmaceutical Merchandising”.

Since 1943, at Kharkov Institute of Pharmacy the department of military and sanitary training taught medical and pharmaceutical commodityology, and since 1991 the department of pharmaceutical and medical commodityology has been created, since 1996. The Department of Pharmaceutical and Medical Commodity Science became part of the Department of OEF, and since 1997. – Department of Extreme and Military Medicine.

Today in the department work teachers: Doctor of Pharmacy, Professor I.I. Baranova; PhD of Pharmacy Sciences, associate professor Bezpalaya Yu. O, PhD of Pharmacy Sciences, associate professor Breusova S.V.; PhD of Pharmacy Sciences, associate professor Zaporozhskaya S.M., PhD of Pharmacy Sciences, associate professor  Bezchasniuk O.M., PhD of Pharmacy Sciences, Assoc. Dyadyun T.V.; PhD of Pharmacy Sciences, Assoc.  Nikitina M. V. Teachers of the department constantly work on increase of level of qualification and professional skill. This work is carried out by training at courses of advanced training NUPh and constantly staff are actively involved in Ukrainian and miznaridnyh conferences, webinars, trengings and the like.

In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine № 532 from 23.08.2011. Approved a new list of reference departments of higher medical (pharmaceutical) education institutions III-IV levels of accreditation and institutions of postgraduate education of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, in which the Department of Commodity Science became a reference in the disciplines: – “Medical and Pharmaceutical Commodity Science” on specialty “Pharmacy” and “Clinical Pharmacy”; – “Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Commodity Science” on specialty “Technology of perfumes and cosmetics”; – “Basics of Materials Science, Containers and Packaging” on specialty “Technology of Pharmaceuticals”
